You’ve been bitten by the CrossFit bug. You have either rediscovered the competitive spirit from your former days as an athlete, or discovered the joy of training for the first time.
The whiteboard calls out to you. You study it first thing when you arrive at the gym for class. You have watched as your name gradually moves up the board, but you want to accelerate your progress.
You are ready to take your workouts to the next level. Where should you get started?
- Make a decision. The most successful people in any endeavor are those that are committed to putting in the work. Decide what your motivation is for this new endeavor, and then use that motivation to follow through on your commitment.
- Focus. Bring your A-game to class. Concentrate on what the coach is saying and concentrate on your every movement. Look up the WOD beforehand and come up with a strategy (rep scheme, intensity level, etc).
- Take it one step at a time. Choose one skill to work on and come early or stay late to work on that skill for 10 minutes. Stick with that skill for 2 weeks or a month, and then move on to conquer your next skill.
- Use your resources. Ask your coaches for advice, or other more experienced athletes at your box. Make use of open gym time. Avail yourself of all the free information out there on podcasts and blogs.
- Pay it forward. Remember what got you to this point thus far. CrossFit is about community. You know how special the community is at your box, and how you would never give it up. Don’t forget to share your newfound knowledge with others. As you progress, you now get the chance to give back to others what you have been given.
Good luck, and happy training!
